Keys for ESL Students to Improve their English

Keys for ESL Students to Improve their English

1. Practice

Practice English at every opportunity. Practice in and outside class. Don’t be timid. Engage in conversations. Have fun practicing. Read, write, listen and speak. There are 112 waking hours each week. Try to practice English as many of these hours as possible. Practice makes perfect.

2. Self Monitor

Listen to yourself when you speak. Self monitoring means you control your pronunciation and you correct yourself. You think before you speak. The language information in class that students lean helps them become more effective self-monitors. Self monitor every time that you use English. Without constant self-monitoring, students may fall back into old habits and old mistakes. When you self monitor your writing, this is called “editing”.

3. Ask for Correction

Say “thank you” when someone corrects you. Never be defensive or embarrassed about making mistakes. Making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. No one learns a second language without making mistakes. When someone corrects you, you benefit. You learn from your mistake. Without correction, you will continue to make the same mistakes over and over. Mentally make a note of each correction to avoid the mistake in the future.

My plan

At the present, I'm very fine but my study has got some troubles. It goes from bad to worse because of in my head usually think to change into a new school.
I’m intending to do that when I finish half of this course.

I hate my girlfriend,

In recent times, I go out and spend most of time with my girlfriend. She is studying English in Satya’s class and I'm studying in Shan's class. Her English is quite bad and me too. I fell in love with her 4 months ago and I love her very much. Day by day she helps me and change my life to become better. I’m very happy when I sit next to her.
Unfortunately I really realize worry about that because of we took out a lot times already. I known her just learned a little bit English and I didn’t learn anything when we stayed at home. It’s very serious for us when the exam is arriving.
In the case I think it’s my fault. I should and must change, do something.

If she's reading this post I hope she understands and agrees with me.

I promise you I'll never hide.

I Love You!
In this morning, I got up at seven to quarter o'clock. I brushed my teeth and had a shower at half past eight. I went out home and ate breakfast in the food center before I went to school by mrt.

My class started at 9 am and our teacher checked absent students. He’s a serious man and quite funny. He usually takes care everybody in class. He teach me and my friends how to write, speak and work group. I have a lot of friends in class and they’re from different countries: Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia.

This course, Hawthorn has got 2 class in Intermedia. I know everybody who studies in Intermedia because of we often study, watch movie and have exams in a big room. We have a good break time for lunch near our school. We always talk mother tongue to students who are from same country.

Funny week !

This week, I came back Singapore to study in Intermedia in Hawnthorn language school. I was late for 1 week already because my family has got some problems so I didn’t know which class I was going to join. I asked some friends who studies in Satya’s class. They said I studied in Shan’s class. The first I went to study in Shan’s class for 2 hours. My teacher told me have no my name in this class. After that I arrived quickly and asked carefully Andalyn who works in TMC academy at the 17 floor. She told me that I was going to study in Satya’s class. I’m very quiet so when I joined in that class. I’m very afraid of Satya because of she talks very fast, too much and many difficult words but she's very funny and my friends like her very much. I couldn’t follow her and very worry from Monday to Thursday. Another reason, I didn't want to study with my girl friend in a same class because of I couldn't focus to study. I remembered that Ken who is my teacher in Pre-Intermedia. He recommended me go to Shan’s class because of my writing is quite bad. At that moment my thought would like to come back Shan’s class. It might better and accorded with me. Now I study in Shan’s class and I enjoy very much in there.

My vacation

My vacation

My vacation was for 3 days.

Last summer, I went on holiday to Nha Trang and Da Lat with my family by car. Nha Trang and Da Lat are two citys in Viet Nam.

When we arrived Nha Trang. We stayed in the hotel which near the beach. It was very nice and not too expensive. We visited Nha Trang's beautiful sight. Nha Trang people were very friendly and hospitable. The beaches in there so nice with blue pure water. I liked swimming in the sea and sunbathe. My parents and my sister didn’t like the water, they liked to sit on the beach to ate seafood, drank beer and coke. It was very delicious.

The next day, my family went to Da Lat. The weather was cool and a little wet. I visited a lot of places: Hai Mo Hill, Love Valley, Than Tho Lake,...and stayed in a 4 star hotel. Da Lat was called city of flower; because there were many kind of flowers, all of them were very radiant. In the afternoon, we walked to along the hill. Everything were very romantic so I took so much pictures. In the evening, we came back to hotel and spent on long night to sing in a karaoke room.

That was wonderful vacation! I hope I'll come back to there in next vacation.

My oldest friend

My oldest friend

My oldest friend is called T. We met twenty-three years ago when we were both children. He lived in Viet Nam. His house is next to my house. We are neighbours so I see him everyday. We often went to the beach and played football. Sometimes we went shopping and went to the cinema. His family was poor but my family was rich. We studied together in secondary school. He was a good friend and very friendly. We left school fifteen-years later.

Then he went to university, but I didn't. At that moment I was working for my parent's company about four years. He studied for five years because he wanted to be an engineer. He had a lot of new friends. After that I didn't see hime very often.

Now, he has a good job in Viet Nam and I study abroad in Singapore. We often talk on the internet.

The Key To Excellent English

What is the most important English skill? What skill must you have to communicate well?

Obviously, number 1 is Fluency. What is fluency? Fluency is the ability to speak (and understand) English quickly and easily... WITHOUT translation. Fluency means you can talk easily with native speakers-- they easily understand you, and you easily understand them. In fact, you speak and understand instantly.

Fluency is your most important English goal.

The research is clear-- there is only ONE way to get fluency. You do not get fluency by reading textbooks. You do not get fluency by going to English schools. You do not get fluency by studying grammar rules.

Listening Is The Key

To get English fluency, you must have a lot of understandable repetitive listening. That is the ONLY way. To be a FANTASTIC English speaker, you must learn English with your ears, not with your eyes. In other words, you must listen. Your ears are the key to excellent speaking.

What kind of listening is best? Well, it must be understandable and must be repetitive. Both of those words are important-- Understandable and Repetitive.

If you don't understand, you learn nothing. You will not improve. That's why listening to English TV does not help you. You don't understand most of it. It is too difficult. It is too fast.

Its obvious right? If you do not understand, you will not improve. So, the best listening material is EASY. That’s right, you should listen mostly to easy English. Most students listen to English that is much too difficult. They don’t understand enough, and so they learn slowly. Listen to easier English, and your speaking will improve faster!

Understanding is Only Half The Formula.

Understanding is not enough. You must also have a lot of repetition. If you hear a new word only once, you will soon forget it. If you hear it 5 times, you will still probably forget it!

You must hear new words and new grammar many times before you will understand them instantly.

How many times is necessary? Most people must hear a new word 30 times to remember it forever. To know a word and instantly understand it, you probably need to hear it 50-100 times!

That's why I tell my students to listen to all of my lessons many times. I tell them to listen to the Mini-Stories, the Vocab Lessons, The Point-of-View Stories, and the Audio articles everyday. I recommend that they listen to each lesson a total of 30 times (for example, 2 times a day for two weeks).

So, the two most important points are: listen to easier English and listen to each thing many times.

Powerful Listening and Excellent Speaking

1. Practice “Narrow Listening”

“Narrow listening” means listening to many things about the same topic. This method is more powerful than trying to listen to many different kinds of things.

Students who listen to similar things learn faster and speak better than students who listen to different kinds of things.

For example, you can choose one speaker and find many things by him. Listen to all of his podcasts, audio books, and speeches. This is powerful because all speakers have favorite vocabulary and grammar. They naturally repeat these many times. By listening to many things by the same person, you automatically get a lot of vocabulary repetition. You learn faster and deeper!

Another example is to choose one topic to focus on. For example, you could read an easy book, listen to the same audio book, listen to a podcast about the book, and watch the movie.

I did this with my class in San Francisco. We read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Then we listened to the audio book. Then we watched (and listened to) the movie. Then we listened to interviews with actors in the movie. My students learned a lot of vocabulary in a short time, and their speaking improved very quickly.

2. Divide Your Listening Time
Which is better: to listen for two hours without a break, or to divide that time during the day? Well, dividing your listening time is best.

By dividing your time throughout the day, you remember more and learn faster. So its much better to listen 30 minutes in the morning, then 30 minutes in the car or train, then 30 minutes coming home from work, then 30 minutes before sleep. In fact, this is the exact schedule I recommend to my students!

3. Use an iPod or MP3 Player
iPods are fantastic. You can put a big listening library on one. Then you can carry your English lessons everywhere. You can learn English while walking, while shopping, in the car, in a train, while cooking,.......

With an iPod or MP3 player, you don’t have to worry about CDs. Also, you can find a lot of English listening on the internet. You can find lessons, stories, podcasts, TV shows, interviews, and audio books. Simply download the audio, put it on your iPod.. and learn English anywhere!

4. Listen To Movies
Movies are great for learning English BUT you must use them correctly. Don’t watch all of an English movie. You will not understand it, and therefore you will not learn anything.

Only watch one scene or segment per week (maybe 2-3 minutes). Follow this method:
a) First, watch the scene with subtitles in your language. This will help you understand the general meaning.
b) Second, watch the scene with English subtitles. Pause. Use a dictionary to find new words you
don’t understand. Write the new sentences in a notebook.
c) Listen to the scene a few times, with English subtitles. Do not pause.
d) Listen to the scene a few times, without subtitles.
e) Repeat a) - d) everyday for one week.

On the second week, go to the next scene/segment and repeat again. It will take you a long time to finish a movie. That’s OK, because you will improve your listening and speaking VERY FAST. This method is powerful-- use it!

5. Read and Listen at the Same Time
Listening and Reading together are very powerful. While you listen to something, also read it. This will improve your pronunciation.

Reading while listening also helps you understand more difficult material. Read and listen to learn faster. After you do this a few times, put away the text and just listen. You will understand a lot more and you will improve faster. Always try to find both audio and text materials.

To start, you can read my blog and listen to my podcast at:
Audio & Text
http://www.EffortlessEnglishClub.com
Another great idea is to get both a book and its audio book (ie. the above example of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”).

6 Months To Excellent English Speaking
Follow the above suggestions (and the 7 Rules in my email course) and you will speak excellent English.

I have been teaching over 10 years. Every student who follows these methods succeeds. Always! The Effortless English method is the key to speaking excellent English. It is the key to fluency.

You only need 6 months-- 6 months and you will speak easily to native speakers. 6 months and you will speak quickly and naturally. 6 months and you feel relaxed when you speak English.

You have tried the old ways. You tried textbooks. You tried schools. You tried grammar study.

It is time to try something new!

Good luck. I wish you success with your English learning!

How to Hear English Everywhere

Two simple definitions

to hear: to receive sound with the ears
to listen: to try to hear

You are very good at languages. That's obvious, because you already speak one language very well - your own! And if you can learn and speak one language well, then you can certainly learn and speak one or more other languages.

But did you ever ask yourself: "How did I learn my own language?" In fact, you never really "learned" it at all - you just started speaking it. One day, when you were about two or three years old, you started speaking your language. A few words at first, not full sentences. But you spoke. And very soon you made progress without even thinking about it. It was like magic!

But it wasn't magic. It was the result of hearing. For two to three years before you spoke, you heard people speaking your language all day, and maybe all night. You heard people speaking your language. Maybe you listened to people, but more importantly you heard. them. Then, as if by magic, you started to speak. All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking. For two to three years words went IN to your head. Then words came OUT of your head! That is why hearing (and listening to) English as much as possible is so important to you now. The more English you put in, the more you'll get out!

So how can you hear a lot of English when you're not in an English-speaking country or family? Fortunately, there are many ways of hearing English in almost all countries of the world.

Radio
You can receive English language radio in most countries. Two of the best international networks are the BBC World Service and Voice of America. Both of them have special programmes for learners of English. You can find information about times and frequencies for your country on their web sites. Click here for links to radio stations.

Television
TV is an excellent resource for hearing and listening to English. The pictures help you understand what is being said. If you don't have access to English-language TV, you may be able to watch TV on Internet.

Internet
It is now a lot easier to hear English by Internet. If you're reading this at your computer, you can probably listen to some English-language radio news right now, without even moving! To be able to listen to radio on the Internet, you'll need to have special software called a "player" installed in your computer. Most sites work with two players - the RealPlayer from RealNetworks and the Windows Media Player from Microsoft. Don't worry. Both these players are free and you may already have them installed on your computer.

Music/songs
Songs in English are everywhere, even on foreign-language radio and TV stations. Listen to them often. Buy some cassettes or CDs, or make recordings, and try to write the words for an entire song. But choose one that is not too difficult. That means it should be reasonably slow, and with real words sung clearly. Some pop songs are very unclear and are difficult even for native English-speakers to understand fully!

Cinema
Outside the English-speaking world, many large cities have cinemas that show films in English, usually with sub-titles. Make it a habit to go to these films. If you need to read the sub-titles, at least you'll be hearing English even if you don't understand it.

Video
Video has one really great advantage. You can play it again . . . and again. You can use video to watch film cassettes that you buy or borrow. If there are sub-titles, you can cover them with paper (which you can remove if you really don't understand after listening several times). And you can use video to record programmes from television and then watch them several times to improve your understanding.

Friends
Try to make friends with English-speaking people so that you can practise your English through conversation. Of course, this will practise your speaking as well as your listening. And if you don't have a lot of time to go out and meet people, at least you can chat a little by telephone.

Finally, don't worry if you don't understand everything you hear. Hearing comes first! Understanding comes next!

The Importance of Speaking Practice

There are 4 key skills when you learn a language:

listening
speaking
reading
writing

Which one of these is the "Odd-One-Out"? Which one of these is different from the other three? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone, on your own, without anyone else. You can listen to the radio alone. You can read a book alone. You can write a letter alone. But you can't really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be "dangerous" because men in white coats may come and take you away!!

That is why you should make every effort possible to find somebody to speak with. Where can you find people who can speak English with you? And how can you practise speaking when you are alone?

At School

If you go to a language school, you should use the opportunity to speak to your teachers and other students. When you go home, you can still practise listening, reading and writing, but you probably can't practise speaking. If your teacher asks you a question, take the opportunity to answer. Try to say as much as possible. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to say as much as possible. Don't worry about your mistakes. Just speak!

Conversation Clubs

Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where people can exchange one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. They are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee.

Shopping

If you are living in an English-speaking country, you have a wonderful opportunity. Practise speaking to the local people such as shop assistants or taxi drivers. Even if you don't want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. "How much does this cost?" "Can I pay by cheque?" "Which do you recommend?" Often you can start a real conversation - and it costs you nothing!

Pubs and Bars

Even if you don't live in an English-speaking country, there are often American, British, Irish and Australian pubs in many large cities. If you can find one of these pubs, you'll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.

Language is all around You

Everywhere you go you find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices on buses and trains... Even if you are not in an English-speaking country, there are often a lot of English words you can see when walking in the street, especially in big cities. And there are always numbers. Car numbers, telephone numbers, house numbers... How can this help you? When you walk down the street, practise reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to yourself. It's not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to "think" in English. For example, if you walk along a line of parked cars, say the number on each car quickly as you pass it. Test yourself, to see how fast you can walk and still say each number. But don't speak too loud!

Songs and Video

Listen to the words of an English-language song that you like. Then repeat them to yourself and try to sing with the music. Repeat the words as many times as possible until they become automatic. Soon you'll be singing the whole song. Or listen to one of your favourite actors on video and repeat one or two sentences that you like. Do it until it becomes automatic. It's good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.

Above all, don't be afraid to speak. You must try to speak, even if you make mistakes. You cannot learn without mistakes. There is a saying: "The person who never made a mistake never made anything." So think of your mistakes as something positive and useful.

Speak as much as possible! Make as many mistakes as possible! When you know that you have made a mistake, you know that you have made progress.

How to write better English

If it takes you twice as long to write something in English as it does in your own language, then try these tips.

Before you start

Ask yourself "Why am I writing?" By thinking about the purpose of your text (perhaps you want to explain something, or ask something etc) you can choose the most appropriate vocabulary and level of formality.

Who are you writing to? Who is your reader, and what is their level of knowledge or English? Choose your language carefully and avoid words and expressions that are too technical or complicated.

Plan before you write. Prepare for writing by making a plan, and looking up all the words you need before you start writing.

A plan helps you keep a clear focus and helps you avoid repetition. Just jot down the points you want to make and order them into logical paragraphs. Remember that paragraphs shouldn't be too long. In fact, in certain types of writing, such as emails, your paragraphs can be one sentence long.

It's quicker to look up all the words you need before you write so you don't interrupt your "flow" of writing.

What to write

Say why you are writing in the first sentence. Use phrases such as "I am writing to enquire about…" so that your reader understands why you are writing. If you're replying to someone, you can write "Thank you for your email."

Use standard greetings and endings. Most letters begin with "Dear Mr X" or "Dear Ms X" and should end "Yours sincerely" (or in American English, "Sincerely yours"). If you know your reader quite well, you can be less formal with "Dear (first name)" and end "Best wishes" or "Best regards". If you absolutely have to write "Dear Sir" end with "Yours faithfully" rather than "Yours sincerely".

In emails you can start with the first name "Jane", or precede it with "Hi". If you are writing to a number of people, you can leave out the greeting. To end an email you can write "Best wishes", "Kind regards", "Thanks" or in British English "Cheers".

Use a closing expression in letters such as "Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance." In emails you can write, for example, "Many thanks for your help."
In letters, write the date out in full: 7 June 2006 or June 7, 2006. Avoid using abbreviated dates such as (7/6/2006) as although British speakers will understand this as 7 June, Americans will understand it to be July 6.

Extra tips

Use linking expressions to connect ideas and sentences. Words such as 'and', 'but', 'therefore', 'however', guide your reader through your ideas and make your writing easier to read. See also Linking Words in our Grammar section.

Be careful of referring words such as 'this' and 'it'. Make sure they refer to the right word or phrase.

Write as concisely as possible. Don't make your sentences too long, as they might become difficult to read. Avoid more than two ideas in any sentence.

Follow this word order principle to keep your sentences concise:

Subject - Verb - Object - Manner - Place - Time(Who — Does—What— How— Where- When)

"Please could you send us the confirmation as quickly as possible."

"The Managing Director will visit the factory on Monday 10 July at 10 am."

Edit what you write. Use your computer spell-check, but check for grammatical mistakes yourself.

Edit out unnecessary words and phrases and avoid old-fashioned words such as "hereby", "herewith" and above-mentioned". Rather than writing "We hereby enclose a brochure", get to the point with "We are enclosing a brochure."

Read what you have written out aloud. Is it easy to read, or are the sentences too long? Have you put in enough punctuation?

Get someone else to check what you have written. Another person may see something that is unclear or a mistake

Courage

I stand up for what I believe is right
I’m not afraid what others might think
I’m so happy being who I am

Sometimes I’m pressured to do things I don’t like
I have the courage to say “No, that’s alright”
I’m happy being who I am

I am not afraid to try
The confidence is in my heart
Even if I fall, I will get up
I will never give up

Caring

It doesn’t matter if you’re big or small
It doesn’t matter if you’re short or tall
It doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is
It doesn’t matter at all

Because we’re all unique in our own special way
We want to treat others like we want to be treated
We care about our friends no matter who they are

Expository Writing

We use expository writing to explain
Provide the reader with some information
Use examples from your main idea
Introduction, Three Bodies, and Conclusion

----------------

The introduction should start with a discussion
About the subject to pull the reader in
Don’t forget the reasons or examples
That will support the main idea

----------------

Each body will focus on the topic
Use examples to prove it to the reader
Use details from your life or your research
That will support the main idea

----------------

In conclusion, I feel I should remind you
Restate your main idea
Go over each of your examples
Leave the reader with a feeling or a question

The Simile Song

A Simile compares two things
By connecting them with words
Such as “Like” or “As”

Now let’s practice what we know
To give meaning and to show
What we want to say

As tough as nails,
As white as a ghost,
As blind as a bat,
It’s burnt like toast

It’s fun to make a Simile with words

You can use a Simile
When you are writing a story
Or when you’re writing poetry

You can make one up or use what is there
But make sure that you compare
Two different words with “Like” or “As”

As clear as a bell,
As cold as ice,
As free as a bird,
As high as a kite

It’s fun to make a Simile with words

a stocking, an airplane, no, I'm kidding!
presents, a candy cane, here we go

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh, hey!
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh, hey!

1,2,3,4!
I can jump, I can dance, I can sing, I can laugh
I can jump, I can dance, I can sing, I can laugh

Let's practice; a reindeer, a sleigh, a snowman, an angel, an elf, mistletoe, here we go

Merry Christmas!

The Hokey Pokey

It’s time for the hokey pokey, here we go!

Put your head in, put your head out, put your head in and you wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

You put your ears in, put your ears out, you put your ears in and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

You do the hokey pokey, hands up, hands down

Do the hokey pokey, hands in front and hands behind

Jump in, jump out, jump in and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

Put your hands in, put your hands out, put your hands in and wiggle….

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

You do the hokey pokey, hands up, hands down

Do the hokey pokey, hands in front and hands behind

You put your knees in, put your knees out, put your knees in and wiggle….

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

Ok, now sit down

Put your feet in, put your feet out, put your feet in and wiggle…

You do the hokey pokey spin around , clap, clap, clap, clap.

You do the hokey pokey, hands up, hands down

Do the hokey pokey, hands in front and hands behind

You do the hokey pokey, hands up, hands down

Do the hokey pokey, ‘cause that’s what its all about!
